QUESTION:

Please tell me about Ruqyah in the light of the Quran and Ahadith. What is it, what can it be used for, and what is the way to carry out this practice? Is it used to get rid of personal problems, when being possessed by Jinns, marital problems etc.

ANSWER:

All praises belong to Allāh, the Creator Most Sublime Who is Uncreated, the One without equal, the One who sent down in the Qur’ān that which is a cure for the Muslims, and a mercy. Peace and blessings be upon our Master, Muhammad Mustafa ﷺ, upon his purified family, his esteemed companions, and whomsoever follows in his blessed footsteps until the last day.

Allāh ﷻ has said Surat Fuşşilat:

قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاءٌ

Proclaim (O dear Prophet Mohammed – ﷺ), “It (the Qur’ān) is a guidance and a cure for the believers”.

[Kanzul Eemaan 41:44]

He ﷻ has also said in Surat Al-‘Isrā:

وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۙ

And We send down in the Qur’ān that which is a cure for the Muslims, and a mercy.

[Kanzul Eemaan 17:82]

In explaining this verse Qadi Muhammad ash-Shawkani writes in Tafsīr Fath al-Qadīr, “if the supplications of the Qur’ān are recited and blown on the sick, they will be cured.”

There are countless traditions which highlight the recitation of the blessed Qur’ān is a means of healing the sick – this is known as ruqya and such a practice is accepted by all Muslims. As for taweez (amulets) these are no different from the protective or healing words except that they are written whilst the latter recited.

Ruqya is permitted by Sacred Law and utilised when there is a need for it, provided three conditions are met:

a) It consist of the words of Allāh ﷻ, His names, or His attributes;

b) The recitation be in Arabic;

c) And the user not believe the words have any effect in themselves, but empowered to do so by Allāh ﷻ.

Ruqya can be used for the eradication of many negative issues and Allaah alone is the Giver of success.

And Allaah knows best
