Doing a Khatm Sharif, i.e. reciting the Noble Qur’an and feeding people, and gifting its reward to the deceased ones, is a good act. There is no reprehension in this. It is also correct to believe that souls of the deceased visit their houses every Thursday.

Imam Ahmad Rida Khan (may Allah have mercy upon him) mentions that Shaykh ‘Abd al-Haqq al-Dihlawi (may Allah have mercy upon him) states in his commentary on Mishkat al-masabih, in the chapter on visiting graves:

Translation: “It is mustahabb (commendable) to perform sadaqah (charity) for seven days after the passing away of a person. Performing sadaqah on behalf of a person who has passed away is beneficial to him/her. There is no difference of opinion regarding this among the people of knowledge. There are sahih (sound) hadiths on this, especially regarding the charity of water. Some scholars opine that the reward of only sadaqah and du’a (supplication) reaches the deceased. It is mentioned in certain narrations that a soul (of a deceased person) visits its house on the night of Friday and waits to see if sadaqah on its behalf is performed or not.” [Ash’iat al-lam’at, vol. 1, pg. 716-717]

Imam Ahmad Rida Khan further quotes a narration from Khazinat al-riwayah:

Translation: “It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on ‘Id, Friday, ‘Ashurah, and Laylat al-bara’ah, souls of the deceased visit their houses, stand on the door, and say, ‘Is there anyone who remembers us? Is there anyone who has pity on us? Is there anyone who mentions our poverty?’” [Fatawa Ridawiyyah, vol. 9, pg. 654]
