QUESTION:
What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: Will the Fast break by applying lipstick?
Questioner: Shaistah from UK
ANSWER:
Whilst fasting one should refrain from applying lipstick, because if by saliva or anything else (the lipstick) travels down the throat then the fast will be invalidated and even if it did not go down the throat rather the taste of the lipstick was felt, in this case the fast will be Makrooh (disliked).
And to taste anything without a need whilst fasting is Makrooh and this is Makrooh e Tanzihi (slightly disliked). As found in Durr e Mukhtaar:
And Allaamah Shaami whilst commentating on the word in Durr e Mukhtaar (َكُرِه) has written in Radd ul Muhtaar,
“The correct view is that in these things it will be Makrooh e Tanzihi.”
