QUESTION:

What do the scholars and muftis of the noble Shari’ah say regarding the following matter; if a baligh (mature) boy or girl becomes in possession of money as Eid gifts that is equivalent to 52.5 tolas of silver, will qurbani then become wajib (necessary) upon them?

Yes that is the case. If in the three days of Eid (starting from the entry of Fajr on the 1st day to the Maghrib time of the 3rd day) a baligh (mature) boy or girl comes in the possession of 52.5 tolas (612.35 grams approximately) money equivalent of silver which according to today’s rate (20/08/2017) is around £257 then qurbani will become wajib (necessary) upon them. This is because they have become eligible to give qurbani in the days of sacrifice. As it is mentioned in Fatawa Hindiyyah,

“If upon entering of the first day of sacrifice the qurbani was not wajib upon him but then he became eligible to do so on the on the final (3rd) day; the qurbani will now become wajib upon him.”

[Fatawa Hindiyyah, Book of Sacrifice, Volume 1, pg 293]

And it is mentioned in Bahār-e-Sharī’at that the time of sacrifice is from subh sadiq (true dawn) of Fajr on the 10th Dhul Hijjah to the sun setting on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah i.e. three days and two nights: these days are known as Ayyām al-Nahr (the days of slaughter).
