Questioner: Adeed from UK

ANSWER:

It is not necessary to offer sacrifice [Qurbani] on behalf of deceased parents in order to send them its reward. However, if one does it, he will be rewarded. Offering sacrifice to Allah ﷻ is an act which is rewarded. Therefore, in addition to offering sacrifice from himself, a person can offer nafl [voluntary] sacrifice on behalf of his parents so that they are rewarded.

It is mentioned in a hadith in Sunan Tirmidhi that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to sacrifice a ram on behalf of the Noble Prophet ﷺ after his passing to the isthmus-realm.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to offer the sacrifice of two rams, one on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ and the other from himself. When he was asked concerning this, he replied, “The Prophet ﷺ ordered me to do it, so I will never leave it.”

[Sunan al-Tirmidhi, hadith 1495]

This hadith proves that sacrifice can be offered on behalf of a deceased person and also one’s own deceased parents.
