QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Din and the muftis of the Sacred Law say regarding this matter, if anyone during Salah (prayer) moving his hand three times meaning he scratched thrice or he did any other action by the movement of his hand, will his prayer become invalid (broken)?

Questioner: Adam from UK

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

If a person, in any one of the rukn (pillars) of Salah (Qiyaam, Ruku, Sajdah or Tashahud) moved his hand thrice (3 times) in such a way that he had opened his hand (from its origin), for example he scratched a certain place and then (after scratching) he lifted his hand (from that certain area) and returned them to their original place. Then (in the same rukn) he opened his hand from its original place again and did what he had to do and then lifted his hand from that place (after scratching). Doing such an action in this manner will be counted as twice, now if he does this again in the same pillar (rukn) his prayer would now become invalid.

As it is cited in Bahar e Shariat:

“In one rukn if one scratched thrice, his prayer has become invalid, this means that a person scratched at one place of his body then he lifted his hand from there and then scratched a second time and again lifted his hand from there (that place) and like this for a third time. If a person kept his hand fixated at one specific place and scratches it a few times (without lifting his hand from that specific place) this will be ruled as one scratch.”
