QUESTION:

On some occasions whilst at work I lead Salah and wanted to clarify what I (as the Imam) should pray after Ruku. After pronouncing ‘سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ’ should the Imam go directly into Sajdah?

Questioner: Suleiman from UK

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

Yes, the Imam should directly go into Sajdah whilst uttering اللہ اکبر after pronouncing سمع اللہ لمن حمدہ as the Hanafi ruling is that it is not Sunnah for the Imam to say ربنا لک الحمد after reciting سمع اللہ لمن حمدہ. As is mentioned in Badai-us-Sanai:

فإن كان إماما يقول سمع الله لمن حمده ولا يقول ربنا لك الحمد في قول أبي حنيفة

If he is an Imam, he should say سمع اللہ لمن حمدہ  and shouldn’t say ربنا لک الحمد  as per the saying of Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah be pleased with him).

[Juzz 1, pp. 209, Al-Maktaba-tul-Shamila]

However if the Imam does recite ربنا لک الحمد there is nothing wrong with this.
