QUESTION:

Is it necessary to have slept for a while in order to fulfil the prerequisite of Tahajjud or can Tahajjud be prayed without having slept? Also how many rakaats of Tahajjud should one pray?

Questioner: Irfan from UK

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

No it cannot be prayed without having slept. It is necessary to have slept for a while to perform the Tahajjud prayer. Otherwise, it will be considered as Salat ul Layl. The least number of rakaat is two, whereas 12 is the most number of rakaat proven from Sunnah. However, you may offer as many as you want.
