QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: what is the shari’ ruling regarding Qada’ Umri (performing qada [makeup] for all the missed prayers in your life time) and where is it proven from? – Is this proven from either Qur’an or Sunnah?

Questioner: Owais from India

ANSWER:

Qada’ Umri salaah is not a separate prayer rather these are all the previous prayers which were not performed, and they all must be prayed. To perform all the missed prayers is Fard (obligatory) so that no debt remains. If one misses prayers due to one’s own laziness then as well as performing those prayers, it is necessary for one to make sincere/truthful repentance so that for those missed prayers one may be forgiven from the punishment which one will have to face for missing prayers in such a scenario (laziness).

The ruling of performing Qada’ Umri prayers have been mentioned in numerous Ahadith, for example the King of Prophethood, the Embodiment of Generosity and Mercy, the Beloved of the Honorable Sustainer (عَزَّوَجَلَّ و صلَّی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وسلَّم) has stated:

Translation: “Whosoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, so his expiation is that whenever he remembers then he must perform it.”

And it is cited in Bahaar e Shari’at that the noble Scholars of Jurisprudence have mentioned:

“If due to forgetfulness or sleep one missed a prayer so to perform that prayer is Fard (obligatory), However, the sin of missing that prayer will not be upon him,

Whereas being awake and upon remembering, bearing in mind that it is NOT currently the makrooh time, he should pray at that time, to delay even more is Makrooh (disliked).”

Furthermore, it is stated in Durre Mukhtaar:

Translation: “Even though performing missed prayers immediately is necessary, However, if one is occupied with the upbringing of one’s children and one’s own necessities /requirements of life, then to delay the missed prayers is permissible.”

(This is why whenever one has the opportunity, one should perform it then.)
