QUESTION:
What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: in our local masjid, for Tarawih they have employed an Imam who has a very short beard. What is the ruling of praying behind him?
Questioner: Ali from UK
ANSWER:
One who keeps his face clean-shaved or trims his beard less than the size of a fist is an open transgressor (faasiq e mu’alin). It is a sin to select such a person for the post of Imaam. Prayer behind such a person is severely disliked (makruh e tahrimi) and if performed it is necessary (waajib) to repeat the prayer. [Fatawa Razawiyyah 3:215, 3:219 and 3:255]
