QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: If a person had a nocturnal discharge and ghusl [major ablution] is fard [obligatory] upon him, then is his fard or nafl [supererogatory] fast valid or not?

Questioner: Ahsan from UK

ANSWER:

الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

Fard ghusl due to nocturnal discharge does not affect the validity of the fast. The fast is valid.

It is mentioned in al-Durr al-mukhtar in the chapter concerning those things that do not nullify the fast:

أَوْ احْتَلَمَ أَوْ أَنْزَلَ بِنَظَرٍ

Translation: “The fast will not break if a person experiences a nocturnal emission or if he sees that semen has discharged.”

[al-Durr al-mukhtar, vol. 2, pg. 400]

The same book states:

أَوْ أَصْبَحَ جُنُبًا وَ) إنْ بَقِيَ كُلَّ الْيَوْمِ)

Translation: “The fast will not break if a person enters subh [dawn] in a state of janabah [major impurity] or remains in that state the entire day.”

[al-Durr al-mukhtar, vol. 2, pg. 400]

It is stated in Bahar-e Shari’at: “The fast will not break if a person enters subh in a state of janabah or remains in that state the entire day. However, it is prohibited and a sin to intentionally not perform ghusl for such a long time, due to which salah is missed.”

[Bahar-e Shari’at, vol. 1, pg. 984]
