QUESTION:
What do the scholars and muftis of the mighty Shari’ah say regarding the following matter, what is the method of drinking Zam Zam water. Also, please mention some etiquettes related to it.

ANSWER:
بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب
Zam Zam water should be drunk whilst facing the ka’bah, in three sips whilst standing. If there is sufficient water then one should drink to his fill. One should recite بِسْم الله at the start of every sip and finish with الحمد لله, du’ā should also be recited at this time as it is when du’ās are accepted. The Messenger of Allāh (upon him be peace and blessings) said,
مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ لِمَا شُرِبَ لَهُ
“Zam Zam water is for whatever purpose it is drank for”.
[Sunan ibn Mājah, Hadīth 3062, Voume 3, pg 490]
It is preferred if the following du’ā is recited,
اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَسْأَلُکَ عِلْمًا نَّافِعًا وَّرِزْقًا وَّاسِعًا وَّعَمَلاً مُّتَقَبَّلاً وَّشِفَآءً مِّنْ کُلِّ دَآءٍ
Zam Zam water should be drunk whilst standing as it is sunnah to drink it whilst standing; just as it is mentioned Bahār-e-Sharī’at, it is also sunnah to drink Zam Zam water whilst standing.

The wisdom behind standing whilst drinking it is that when water is drunk whilst standing, it flows to all of the body parts, this is harmful [usually], however this is blessed water and the purpose of it is to seek blessings, therefore, it reaching all of the body parts is beneficial.
