QUESTION:
What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: Can I make du’ā to increase my height?
Questioner: A sister from UK
ANSWER:
بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب
A short individual making du’ā for an increase in height, or a tall individual making du’ā for a decrease in height are both forbidden; just as the father of Ala Hazrat, Mawlānā Naqī ‘Alī Khān (may Allāh have mercy upon him) writes in his book, Ahsan al-Wi’ā li Ādāb al-Du’ā:
One should not exceed the bounds when making du’ā, for example: to ask for the rank of the Prophets (upon them be salutations and peace), expressing a desire to scale the skies, and likewise, all those things which are impossible or close to impossible should not be asked for;
اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الۡمُعۡتَدِيۡنَ
“Indeed, Allah dislikes those who exceed the bounds’’
[Surah al-Baqarah, Verse 190]
And he further states:
Included in this is that one supplicates for a change in those matters which have already been sealed by fate, for example, a tall individual supplicates: may my height decrease, or a small-eyed individual says: may my eyes become larger.
[Ahsan al-Wi’ā li Ādāb al-Du’ā, pages 172 & 175]
