QUESTION:
Is it permissible to fast without eating suḥūr (pre-dawn meal)?
ANSWER:
It is permissible to fast without suḥūr (Fatāwa `Ālamgīri), but it is recommended (mustaḥabb) to eat suḥūr and then fast. It is narrated in “al-Mu`jam ul-Awsaṭ” by Ṭabarāni and “Ṣaḥīḥ ibn Ḥibbān” from our Master `Abdullah ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah and His angels send benedictions (durūd) upon people eating suḥūr. Imām Aḥmad narrates from our Master Abu Sa`eed al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Suḥūr is filled with Baraka, so don’t leave it, even if it is only a sip of water, for Allah and His angels send benedictions upon people eating suḥūr” (أو كما قال صلى الله علِه وسلم).
