QUESTION:

What do the scholars and muftis of the noble Shari’ah say regarding the following matter; can a husband and wife hold each other’s hands in public?

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

A husband and wife should avoid holding hands in public as it is not seen to be appropriate in the Muslim society we live in today. Whatever a Muslim considers to be bad/inappropriate, it is also bad in the sight of Allāh ﷻ.

“عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَا رَآهُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَسَنًا فَهُوَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ حَسَنٌ، وَمَا رَآهُ الْمُسْلِمُونَ قَبِيحًا فَهُوَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ قَبِيحٌ”

The merciful Prophet ﷺ stated that, “Whatever a mu’min believes to be good is good in the sight of Allah عزوجل and whatever a mu’min considers to be bad is bad in the view of Allah”
