QUESTION:

At the Friday prayer, after praying the four sunnah rak’at and two fard rak’at (of the Jummah prayer), with what intention are the following four rak’at sunnahs prayed with? Are they classed as sunnahs of the Zuhr prayer or of the Jummah prayer?

Questioner: Rizwan and Farukh from UK

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

Jumu’ah prayer is an obligation in and of itself on the day of Friday and not a substitute for Zhuhr.

“And it [salāt al-Jumu’ah] is an obligation in and of itself.”

[Radd al-Muhtār ‘ala al-Durr al-Mukhtār]

The four sunnah prayed before Jumu’ah are with the intention of Jumu’ah. One intends: I intend to pray four prior sunnah raka’ats of Jumu’ah, for the sake of Allāh Most Transcendent. After the 2 fards of Jumu’ah one intends: I intend to pray four post sunnah raka’ats of Jumu’ah for the sake of Allāh Most Transcendent.

Thus both the four sunnahs before and after Jumu’ah are to be offered with the intention of them being prior and post sunnahs of Jumu’ah. As is mentioned in Nūr al-Idāh:

“And [4 sunnah mu’akkadah raka’ats] before Jumu’ah and [4 sunnah mu’akkadah rak’ats] after it [Jumu’ah] .”

[Nūr al-Idāh wa Najāt al-Arwāh]
