QUESTION:

Is it allowed to write ‘Salam’ in English or any other language? Sometime back I read a fatwa that it is haram to write Assalamu Alaikum in a language other than Arabic but not sure.

ANSWER:

It is allowed to write ‘assalamu alaikum’ in English or any other language.

Scholars have stated that writing verses from the Quran in a language other than the Arabic script is prohibited and it is clear that ‘assalamu alaikum’ is not a verse from the Qur’an.

Mufti Ahmad Yaar Khan Naeemi (رحمة الله عليه) writes, “Just like it is prohibited to change the sentences of the Qur’an (because it will end up being other than the Qur’an), likewise, it is prohibited to change the script of the Quran (because it will be other than the actual script of the Quran). Never mind English and Hindi, it is even prohibited to write Quran in Nastaleeq script. It will always be written in the Naskh script.”
