QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: Is a Muslim female allowed to ride bicycle?

Questioner: Farhan from UK

ANSWER:

There is no harm in it if done as an exercise in one’s yard or elsewhere with some privacy [preferably], for riding bicycle is proven to be medically beneficial and here, in the United Kingdom, doctors recommend it for the treatment of various ailments.

All exercises are permissible for your physical fitness, and running is proven from the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him, as it is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawood, narrated by Sayyidah ‘Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with her.  She said:

“I was on a journey with the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon him.  I had a race with him, and I outstripped him (running) on my feet. When I became chubby, I had a race with him and (this time) he outstripped me. He said: This is for that outstripping.”
