QUESTION:

I just wanted to ask you is a person required to give kaffara if he or she happened to have opened the fast before sunset thinking that the sun had set but later realising that it hadn’t set? And how does one go about giving the kaffara?

ANSWER:

If you unintentionally open your fast before the time of Maghrib, the Kaffara is not required.

Kaffara is only required when the fast is broken intentionally by eating, drinking or having sexual intercourse.

[Kutub-e-Mutoon]

However, you would need to perform qadha (make-up) of that fast.

Allah knows best.
