QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: Is it permissible to work in the financial crimes department of a bank, in which one does not have to deal with any interest?

Questioner: Bilal from UK

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

According to my research, this department takes action against matters such as cheque fraud, credit card fraud, mortgage fraud, medical fraud, security fraud, healthcare fraud, and the likes. If this department does not delve in interest, then it is permissible to work for them. However, I feel as though maybe one does end up dealing with interest-based matters somewhat when it comes to credit card fraud and mortgage fraud. The many people who deal with interest have been cursed and are all equal in sin.

Just as it is narrated in Sahīh Muslim by Sayyidunā Jābir, may Allāh ﷻ be pleased with him,

“لعن رسول اﷲصلی اﷲ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم اکل الربا ومؤکلہ وکاتبہ وشاھدیہ وقال ھم سواء”

“The Noble Messenger of Allāh ﷺ cursed the one who accepted interest, the one who gave it, the one who noted it down and those who were witness upon it; they are all equal.”

[Sahīh Muslim, vol 2, pg 27]

On the contrary, I cannot say that working in this department is impermissible merely on the basis of doubt.
