[Q-ID0700] Does Periodontal (gum) surgery or having a tooth removed break the Fast?

QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: How is to have periodontal (gum) surgery from the dentist while fasting, and if blood exits in this case and reaches the throat, then will this invalidate one’s fast, and if so then what kaffārah [expiation] will one have to give [in exchange]?

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

One should not have teeth, etc. removed while in the state of fasting because there is an extreme likelihood of blood exiting and reaching the throat because of this. Moreover, if the blood exited and [having reached the throat] actually went down, then the fast will become invalid. However, in this case, there will not be any kaffārah, rather only the qadā’ of that particular fast will be required, just as ‘Allāmah Ibn ‘Ābidīn Shāmī, upon whom be endless mercies, states in Radd al-Muhtār,

مَنْ قَلَعَ ضِرْسَهُ فِي رَمَضَانَ وَدَخَلَ الدَّمُ إلَى جَوْفِهِ فِي النَّهَارِ وَلَوْ نَائِمًا فَيَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ الْقَضَاءُ

“Whosoever had their molars [i.e. teeth] removed and blood entered into the throat while in the state of fasting, even if in the state of sleep, so [only] qadā’ [of that fast] is wājib upon him.”

Furthermore, it is stated in Bahār-e-Sharī’at that if while fasting, one had their tooth extracted, and blood came out having flowed below the throat, then even if this occurred while sleeping, [only] the qadā’ for that fast is wājib.
