QUESTION:

What do the scholars of Islam and the Jurists of the Sacred Law say in the query that I (the questioner) have been afflicted with an illness due to which my throat bleeds and sometimes I can taste the blood in my throat.  Will my fast become invalid or remain valid?

Questioner: Sufyan, from England

ANSWER:

If the blood continues to flow and proceeds below the throat and the blood is either equivalent to the volume of saliva or more then the fast will become invalid, and if the blood is less than the saliva but one can taste it in the throat then too, the fast will break, and if it was less than the saliva but its taste was not felt in the throat the fast will not break; as it has been cited in Al-Durr al-Mukhtar as follows:

If the blood flowed from one’s teeth and entered his throat but did not reach his stomach (then the fast did not break) but if it reached the stomach then if the blood was more or equivalent to the saliva the fast would break, and if it was less but its taste was felt in the throat then too, the fast would break, and if the taste was not felt then it would not invalidate the fast.
