QUESTION:

What is the ruling regarding selling fireworks? Can we sell fireworks to non-Muslims?

ANSWER:

It is prohibited to make and sell fireworks to both Muslims and non-Muslims. Fireworks are only permissible with conditions in certain circumstances; like to signal the sighting of the new moon or when frightening animals to protect the crop or to frighten dangerous predatory animals etc.

That which is prohibited to sell to Muslims is also prohibited to be sold to non-Muslims.

Allah the Most High says in the Qur’an –

وَلَا تُبَذِّرۡ تَبۡذِيرًا

“but squander not (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift (a person who spends money in an extravagant, irresponsible way)”

[Surah Isra, verse 26]

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,

“All idle pastimes that the Muslim man engages in are falsehood, except for his shooting of his bow, his training of his horse, and his playing with his wife, for they are from truth.”

[Tirmidhi – Book 22, Hadith 19]

Imam Ahmad Rida Khan (رحمة الله عليه) in replying to similar question states, “It is prohibited and a sin (to make and use fireworks).”

[Fatawa Ridawiyyah vol 23, page 290]

Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Naeemi (رحمة الله عليه) writes : “It is well reported that fireworks were discovered by Namrood when he put Prophet Ibraheem (عليه السلام) in the fire” he then writes, “Making and selling firework, buying and making someone buy it, using it or making someone using it, all are haraam.”
