QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: Will the Fast become invalid if rainwater travels down the throat?

Questioner: Brother from UK

ANSWER:

Without doubt, a persons’ Fast will become invalid when rainwater meaning water from the clouds has gone down the throat. As cited in Fatawa Hindiyyah:

“Rainwater and snow; when it enters the throat, it will invalidate the Fast and this is the correct opinion.”

[Al Fatawa Hindiyyah, Book of Fasting, Chapter Four regarding that which invalidates and does not invalidate the fast, Volume 1, Page 302]

And if one intentionally drank rainwater, then with the presence of the other conditions necessitating expiation (kaffarah), a kaffarah will also be necessary upon him too.
