QUESTION:

Earlier this year me and my husband had a major argument. In which he said in English “I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you” 3 times in one go in extreme anger. When I looked at his face he looked shocked at what he just said. Since then he has not been talking to me.

Now my question is, is this a divorce? I still love him and want us to be together

ANSWER:

Based on the wording related by the questioner, three pronouncements of irrevocable divorce have taken place such that the husband cannot enter into nikah again with the now former wife unless she ends up marrying another man, consummates that marriage and ends up divorced at some later stage.

Imam Ahmad Rida Khan (رحمة الله عليه) has mentioned regarding three pronouncements of divorce in one sitting: “Without doubt according to the consensus (ijma) of the four Imams the three divorces have taken place.”

[al-Fatawa al-Ridawiyyah vol 12]

The Imam also states: “The excuse of anger is worthless, divorce most often occurs in anger” [ibid.]

Allah knows best.
