QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: What is the Islamic ruling about cigarettes and is the income earned from cigarettes Halāl or Harām??

Questioner: Hamza from UK

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

Even though smoking cigarettes is harmful to one’s health, however this is only an opinion, and there are many people who smoke cigarettes and nothing happens to them, hence it is permissible to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the buying and selling of a permissible thing is also permissible. Furthermore, the money attained via this trade is also Halal. There is no reason to rule/classify this as haram. However, it is indeed better to refrain from smoking cigarettes.
