QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: How can we dispose of our nails and hair clippings?  Are we allowed to flush them in the drain?

Questioner: Fareed from UK

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

The hair and nails etc. are supposed to be buried after they have been removed from the body but if it is not accessible; as in the situation of the Muslims living in English countries, they may flush it in the bathroom but doing so is Makrooh Tanzeehi (not really a vice or a punishable offense but morally damning).  As it is not permissible for a stranger to look at the pubic hair and the hair of a woman, one is therefore advised to bury the hair or throw it at a place where no stranger will see it.

As Allamah Ibn ‘Aabideen al-Shaami writes the following in Radd al-Muhtar:

When one clips one’s nails or removes one’s hair then he/she is advised to bury it but there is no harm if one throws it somewhere.  If one flushes it in the washroom or bathroom then it is undesirable, for it causes contamination.

[Radd al-Muhtar Vol. 6, p. 405]

Allamah Ibn ‘Aabideen al-Shaami writes further in Radd al-Muhtar:

Any body part which was not allowed to be looked at prior to its separation from the body will not be allowed to be looked at after its separation from the body as well; such as the pubic hair and hair from a woman’s scalp etc.

[Radd al-Muhtar Vol. 1, p. 408]
