QUESTION:
Is working in a bank allowed in Islam?
ANSWER:
If a person is not directly involved in the dealings of loans, interest transactions like creating documents, signing the documents etc. then this job will be deemed halal (lawful), otherwise it would be considered haram (unlawful).
The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم) prohibited usury and all the people directly involved in it.
عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم آكِلَ الرِّبَا وَمُوكِلَهُ وَشَاهِدَهُ وَكَاتِبَهُ
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم) cursed the one who accepted usury, the one who paid it, the witness to it, and the one who recorded it.
[Abu Dawud Book 23, Hadith 8]
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ لَعَنَ آكِلَ الرِّبَا وَمُوكِلَهُ وَشَاهِدَيْهِ وَكَاتِبَهُ
The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وصحبه وسلم) cursed the one who consumes usury, the one who pays it, those who witness it and the one who writes it down.
[Ibn Majah Book 12, Hadith 2277]
