الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

The Zakāh on this is not wājib for you right now, because Zakāh on gold, silver or the currency – which reach the threshold – becomes fard at the time when a full year has passed on [possession of] it, in terms of lunar months. The reason for this is that it is a condition that a year passes for Zakāh being wājib, and it is stated as so in many Hadīths.

Just as it is narrated, via an authentic chain of narration, by Sayyidunā ‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Umar, may Allāh Almighty be pleased with him,

“‘قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ‘مَنْ اسْتَفَادَ مَالًا فَلَا زَكَاةَ عَلَيْهِ، حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الحَوْلُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِ”

“The Noble Messenger of Allāh ﷺ stated that, ‘Whosoever acquired wealth, so there is no Zakāh upon it until a full [lunar] year has passed [while it is in the possession of such person].’”

[Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Hadīth no 631]

Likewise, it is stated in Abū Dāwūd,

عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِبَعْضِ أَوَّلِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، قَالَ: «فَإِذَا كَانَتْ لَكَ مِائَتَا دِرْهَمٍ وَحَالَ عَلَيْهَا الْحَوْلُ، فَفِيهَا خَمْسَةُ دَرَاهِمَ

[Sunan Abī Dāwūd, vol 2, pg 100, Hadīth no 1537]

It is stated in another place in the same book,

“عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، لَيْسَ فِي مَالٍ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ»”

[Sunan Abī Dāwūd, vol 2, pg 100, Hadīth no 1537]

Furthermore, it is stated in Ibn Mājah,

“عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَا زَكَاةَ فِي مَالٍ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ”

[Sunan Ibn Mājah, Hadīth no 1792]

Moreover, it is stated as so in the renowned Hanafī book Tanwīr al-Absār ma’ Durr Mukhtār,

“وَشَرْطُهُ أَيْ شَرْطُ افْتِرَاضِ أَدَائِهَا حَوَلَانُ الْحَوْلِ”

“It is a condition for Zakāh being Fard that a complete [lunar] year passes.”

PLEASE NOTE: If before receiving this gift you was already in possession of gold above the Nisab amount [7.5 Tolas or 87.478g of gold] then you WOULD pay Zakah on this additional gold gift you received only 6 months ago.

Please read the following from [Q-ID0687] :-

Just as it is stated in Bahār-e-Sharī’at that if a person is the owner of the threshold (i.e. liable for Zakāh), and in the middle of the year, he acquired some of the same type (of commodity), then the year for the new wealth is not counted as a separate year, but the end of the year of the initial wealth (or cash, etc.) is the same year ending for this as well, even if it was acquired a minute before the year ended.

And it does not matter whether this asset was attained by means of the same initial commodity, or whether it was acquired by way of inheritance, or as a gift, or by way of some other permissible means. However, if it is of a different type, for example, initially, he had camels and now he acquired goats, then he will count a new year for that.
