[Q-ID0497] Does placing a thermometer in the mouth to check temperature nullify the Fast?

QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: does the fast become invalid from placing a thermometer in the mouth to check ones temperature to see if one is ill?

ANSWER:

الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

The fast does not become invalid from placing a thermometer in the mouth to check ones temperature to see if one is ill, provided that there is no medicine, etc on the thermometer, and usually there isn’t any medicine on there because it is placed on the tongue or under the arm and then measures the warmth of the body which then shows the temperature. During this process, nothing exits flowing out and enters the body, whereas the fast generally breaks from whatever enters the body via an actual route. Thus, it is stated in Musannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah that,

الْفِطْرُ مِمَّا دَخَلَ وَلَيْسَ مِمَّا يَخْرُجُ

The fast will become invalid from whatever enters the body, not from whatever exits the body.

Also it is mentioned in Fatawā Ālamgīrī that,

َ وَلَوْ ابْتَلَعَ خَشَبَةً وَطَرَفُهَا فِي يَدِهِ ثُمَّ أَخْرَجَهَا لَا يَفْسُدُ صَوْمُهُ

If someone placed a strip of wood in their mouth and swallowed it but the other end of it is in the hand, then he removes it, his fast will not become invalid.
